Pure Michigan Funding Increases to $36 Million

Thank you to everyone who made time to contact your State Representative and State Senator. Our combined voices were heard and CHECK IN MICHIGAN delivered another $1 million increase for Pure Michigan.
Early in the budget discussion in the House, legislators suggested the complete elimination of funding for Pure Michigan. In the end, a bill was sent to the House Floor that cut funding for Pure Michigan by $2.5 million.
Our legislative friends of tourism, Reps. Larry Inman (R-Traverse City), Lee Chatfield (R- Pellston) and Sue Allor (R- Wolverine) pled the case for Pure Michigan funding and were able to bring funding back to the current $35 million in the House passed budget.
Early in the budget process, CHECK IN MICHIGAN testified before the Senate General Government Appropriations Committee requesting an increase in funding for Pure Michigan – a safe and proven investment. Sen. Jim Stamas (R-Midland) agreed and included a $1 million increase in the Senate-passed budget and fought to maintain that increase during the budget negotiation process.
The long-term goal for Pure Michigan funding is $50 million annually. We understand it will take many years to reach this point and appreciate the efforts of Northern Michigan lawmakers as champions for Pure Michigan during this year’s budget process.
The 2018 elections are a turning point as a record number of legislative seats will turn over. Many of our legislative friends are leaving office due to term limits. It is very important to educate candidates for office on our industry and Pure Michigan.
