AHLA Update on Las Vegas Aftermath

Dear AHLA Member,

In the wake of Monday’s horrific shooting in Las Vegas at a live outdoor concert event, we have been gathering as an industry – as you have individually as companies – to take important steps to ensure the safety of our guests and team members.

As you know, hotels have safety and security procedures in place that are regularly reviewed and updated as are their emergency response procedures.  These include resources and trainings in place for hotel staff to spot and report suspicious activity or behavior, as well as training to care for displaced or injured guests.

Since Monday’s tragic attack, AHLA’s Safety and Security Committee, with representative security experts from within the hotel community, has been convening to assess the impact of this heinous attack. In addition, the industry has been collaborating with law enforcement and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Commercial Facilities Sector as well as coordinating with police and FBI in specific markets. For example, in New York, the NYC Police Force has already reached out to hotels to hold special training sessions following this specific incident.

To that end, we wanted to provide you with some of the most relevant resources currently available that you can share with your teams and appropriate staff and security personal. Our team, along with experts on the Safety & Security Committee, as well as AHLA’s Security Expert will be reviewing all these materials in the wake of this attack to determine how they can be enhanced and updated.  We are also exploring the development of new training videos or other resources in partnership with law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.

Hotel Staff Resources:

  • Terrorist Activities for Hotels – created by the FBI and Bureau of Justice Assistance in conjunction with our industry, this provides an overview for staff on how to spot and report suspicious activity.
  • No Reservations: Suspicious Behavior in Hotels – a joint venture between the hotel community and DHS.  It focuses on what all employees should view as potentially suspicious behaviors in hotels.
  • Active Shooter – this is a tabletop exercise. It focuses on how to react to an active shooter rather than how to prevent one.
  • DHS – Commercial Services Sector – Broad Security Overview – Covers all industries and protecting infrastructure generally from a homeland security perspective.
  • The Protective Measures Guide for U.S. Lodging – created with DHS and AHLA covering security enhancements specific to our industry.
  • Hotel Security and Safety Assessment Form – A self-assessment form on hotel security and safety developed in conjunction with the Department of State.

Guest Resources:

  • Public Service Announcement – meant for guest viewing on the guest room TV, not employees.

In addition, we’ve updated our talking points and have some background materials for you to use (not for distribution), should you be addressing media on this issue.

Finally, we are engaging with key Congressional and Administration officials to act as a resource and provide them with information about everything the hotel industry continues to do to keep our guests and team members safe.  We are also coordinating with other impacted organizations, including the American Gaming Association, and exploring ways to partner on these issues going forward.
